Zionsville Denies Wal-Mart...Again

Zionsville Real Estate News

It is now official; Zionsville will not have a Wal-Mart.  The Zionsville Plan Commission unanimously rejected Wal-Mart’s plan to build a new store on the edge of Zionsville at Michigan Road.  The board had denied the Wal-Mart two years ago which set off a legal battle and ultimately a judge ordered that Zionsville reconsider the retailer.  Well, they reconsidered and again decided not to allow them in citing traffic, drainage, and crime issues.

I am not a resident of Zionsville, but Wal-Mart and Zionsville just don’t seem to go together.  Zionsville has planned accordingly and made concerted efforts to maintain the unique character than Zionsville currently offers.  If they did let Wal-Mart in, they could have been opening Pandora’s Box and sacrificed that quaint image that is Zionsville.  I am quite sure there are divergent views on this one, but I say kudos to Zionsville for preserving what makes the town so inviting in the first place.

That is the same situation that is going on in my hometown in Oregon. They will not let Wal-Mart in, so Target and Fred Meyer are able to run rampant with their higher prices.

Good for them. Wal-Mart has destroyed so many small towns by moving in then deciding it wasn't profitable enough and leaving the town after running every other mom and pop store out of business.

A walmart recently came to Austin there were some meetings with the neighborhood. The reps from Walmart were pretty obnoxious. It made me pretty much not want to buy anything from them again.

This is currently a topic iun Bend, OR as well. We have one Wall Mart, but they have plans to build a Super Wall Mart. So far the city is shutting them down mainly due to traffic.

Having lived in Ashland, OR, which stringently resists box store development and Battle Ground, WA, which makes no effort to control development, I applaud any community which tries to maintain its character and charm. Such efforts can make all the difference in livability.
