My Man Mitch by Mike Taylor

Thank god someone is finally stepping forward and addressing this property tax issue. Governor Mitch Daniels proposed a permanent cap on Indiana property tax bills that he claims would cut the average Hoosier’s bill by 1/3. Basically what the governor is proposing is to cap property taxes at 1% of the assessed value for residential, 2% for rental properties, and 3% for businesses. Hence, a $200,000 house would not pay more than $2,000 in taxes. He is also proposing another homestead exemption of 35% on top of the current $45,000 exemption.

Obviously, we need to make up for that money somewhere else. The somewhere else that the governor is proposing is at the register with a 1% increase in the state sales tax. One other change...

Mo Money Mo Problems by Mike Taylor

Hamilton County’s population could double in the next 30 years if the prediction that came out on Monday comes true. The current population count estimates Hamilton County’s at 256,000 which is already a 40% increase from 2000. The current projections estimate that Hamilton County’s population could be as much as 436,000 by 2040.

From a real estate perspective, you could not ask for anything better. Obviously, Carmel real estate, Fishers real estate, Noblesville real estate, and Westfield real estate all stand to benefit from this population boom. If this trend continues, Hamilton County could replace Marion County with a current population of 865,000 as the state’s most populous.

New Tax Bills Out...Sort Of by Mike Taylor

Get your checkbooks ready…the property tax bills should be hitting your mailboxes this week for Marion County residents. The bills this time around should not provoke riots like the last bill almost did because they are still based on last year’s tax amount. Hence, Marion County residents still have no idea what their taxes are for 2006. The final new bill for 2006 is scheduled to come out in April 2008. At that point, you may, and probably will, still owe more money if your property taxes went up after the newest round of re-assessments.

Don’t forget about that genius idea, the one time rebate check some dim-witted politician dreamed up to opiate us so that we might just take these tax increases without saying a word. Dude,...

Lawrence to Take Back Utilities by Mike Taylor

The Lawrence City Council has finally struck a deal to take back control of Lawrence’s water and sewer utility. For those that don’t know or can’t remember, in 2001 the then mayor of Lawrence, Thomas Schneider, apparently made some back room deal which gave control of the utilities over to some of his cronies for next to nothing. Shortly after this shady deal, water prices skyrocketed making Lawrence water some of the most expensive in the area.

Back from Vacation by Mike Taylor

I am back from vacation and it is on and poppin’. My batteries are recharged and I was even able to sell a house while in Mexico thanks to some very loyal clients. I included a couple photos, one of all us on the trip ( I am on the right), and one of Acapulco Bay. I am officially sick of margaritas and Mexican food.

I have tons to do and catch up on. I am hopefully closing on house Monday, wrapping up another deal, listing a house this week, and should be writing a new offer tomorrow. I have also started to create a Squidoo lens on Indianapolis real estate and will post it here when I have it complete.

Vacation by Mike Taylor

I will leaving for vacation tonight and will be gone for 1 full week. My wife and I and some friends are going down to Acapulco Mexico to use a timeshare we have and have yet to use. Supposedly my cell phone is going to work there and I will be checking my email at least once a day. I will be back late next Friday. Adios.

Restaurant Review - Yat's by Mike Taylor

Yat’s, aah Yat’s. What a delightful change in pace this restaurant is. This ranks as one of my favorites in the city. Yat’s is a New Orleans themed restaurant that has a constantly changing menu posted on a chalkboard. All of the menu items are $5.50 and a ½ and ½ will run you $6.50. I always get the ½ and ½ because it is so hard to choose just one thing. My favorite item on the menu is hands down the white chicken chili. They have all the New Orleans standards such as Jambalaya, Gumbo, etc., but they also offer many items you may not have heard of before. No matter what you get, the food is always delicious and the service is excellent.
